Utah

Legislature Status

Adjourned.

Existing Programs:

Carson Smith Special Needs Program (2005)
Students with disabilities can receive vouchers to attend a private school. The program is capped at $3.75 million.

Pending Legislation

None.

Summary:

In 2007, Utah voters repealed a universal voucher system that Governor Jon Huntsman had recently signed into law by referendum; the program would have offered scholarships to every child to attend private school. Since then, the Utah legislature has been gun shy of private school choice legislation. In the past session, the only bill considered was an expansion of the Carson Smith Special Needs Program.

Republican Governor Gary Herbert is sympathetic to proponents of school choice.
