Pending Legislation:

Senate Bill 89
“Tax Credits For Educational Contributions.”
Gives a tax credit to parents who give cash contributions to private and religious schools. It was introduced on March 27, 2013 by Sen. Mike Dunleavy, R-Wasilla, and has not left committee.

Senate Bill 92 “Municipal Tax Credit For Tuition.”
Would allow municipalities to create tax credits for parents who send their child to private schools. It was introduced on March 29, 2013 by Sen. John Coghill, R-North Pole, and has not left committee.

Breakdown:

The Alaska Constitution explicitly disallows using public funds for private and religious schools. In its 2013 session, the legislature considered a resolution that would allow the state to amend its Constitution to allow voucher schools. That initiative lost support.

Two bills legislating tax credits now head into the 2014 legislative session, one of which was proposed by Senate Majority Leader John Coghill, R-North Pole. Governor Sean Parnell was one of 29 governors to declare “school choice week” in his state.
