Senate Bill 788
“Students With Disabilities School Choice Act”
Gives vouchers to students with disabilities to attend private school. The bill was introduced on Jan. 9, 2013 by Sen. Ruben Diaz, D-Bronx, and has yet to leave committee.

Senate Bill 3510
“Tax Credit for the Expenses of Parents”
Gives a tax credit to parents of children with autism for private-school expenditures. The bill was introduced on Feb. 5, 2013 by Sen. Greg Ball, R-Brewster, and has yet to leave committee.

Senate Bill 4099
“Education Investment Tax Credit”
Creates tax credit scholarship program. The bill was introduced on March 18, 2013 by Sen. Martin Golden, R-Brooklyn, and has yet to leave committee.

Breakdown:

Of the legislation under consideration this session, AB 1826 seems to have popular support. Earlier this April, school choice proponents held a rally in Buffalo, at which politicians and former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly advocated for the legislation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn’t taken a hard stance on private school choice, although he did veto a bill that would have given vouchers to students with disabilities to attend private school.
