Texas

Texas

Legislature Status:

Adjourned.

Existing Programs

None.

Pending Legislation

None.

Summary:

The state legislature considered five school choice bills during its spring session: two would have established a voucher program, while three others would have created tax credit scholarships. None of them made it out committee. Moreover, the House voted overwhelmingly to ban school vouchers and tax credit scholarships, which bodes ill for any legislation that might make it out off the Senate.

The Texas House has a history of thwarting school choice programs – they voted for an identical ban in 2007.

Governor Rick Perry is a supporter of private school choice.
